Five juveniles charged with murder in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY — A 45-year-old man who was assaulted by five juveniles has died, prompting murder charges against the suspects, police announced today.

Peter J. Bennedum, of Binghamton, died at 1:21 p.m. on May 5 at a local hospital where he had been in critical condition since the April 27 assault.

The assault occurred in the area of Carroll Street and Henry Street.

Bennedum was unhoused at the time of the attack.

An autopsy was completed May 6 at United Health Services Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, and the investigation is now being handled as a homicide.

Four juveniles previously charged with attempted murder in the second degree now face upgraded charges of murder in the second degree, a Class A-1 felony.

Those four suspects are currently housed at a juvenile detention facility and are scheduled to appear in Broome County Court at a later date for arraignment on the new charge.

A fifth suspect, a 13-year-old, was located and arrested at approximately 12:45 p.m. May 6 at an address in Whitney Point and was also charged with murder in the second degree.

The 13-year-old was arraigned May 6 in Broome County Court and remanded to the custody of a juvenile detention facility in Syracuse.

The investigation is ongoing in collaboration with the Broome County District Attorney’s Office.
