Suspect on Puerto Rico’s most wanted list arrested in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A man named on Puerto Rico’s most wanted fugitives list was arrested early Tuesday following a break-in at a convenience store.

Wilberto Aleman-Betancourt, 44, of Springfield, was taken into custody at approximately 1:25 a.m. on the 100 block of Maple Street.

Officers responded to the building around 12:30 a.m. for a report of a breaking and entering.

Police observed a hole in the exterior door and another hole on the front door of an interior convenience store.

When officers entered the building, the suspect began running but tripped, allowing officers to take him into custody.

Officers recovered cash and burglarious tools on Aleman-Betancourt.

The suspect initially provided a false name before officers determined his true identity.

Aleman-Betancourt was wanted in Caguas, Puerto Rico, for aggravated burglary and aggravated damage with three extraditable felony warrants.

He had been named as one of Puerto Rico’s most wanted fugitives within the past two weeks.

Aleman-Betancourt is charged with two counts of breaking and entering into a building during nighttime for a felony, larceny from a building, possession of burglarious instruments, resisting arrest, arrestee furnishing a false name/SSN, and fugitive from justice on a court warrant.
