WILLIAMSPORT, PA — The Williamsport Police Department released a statement Sunday addressing what it describes as a slight increase in juvenile-related incidents in the city.
The department said much of the perceived increase is driven by heightened visibility through social media and scanner apps, where police calls are shared publicly in real time.
Most of the increased incidents involve disturbances, curfew violations and disorderly conduct, according to the statement.
The department said it has also seen increases in more serious juvenile offenses, including vehicle thefts and gun-related crimes.
Police said other departments in cities, townships and boroughs are dealing with similar issues.
The department said officers cannot be everywhere at once and cannot predict when or where problems will occur.
Police said when arrests are made, cases are turned over to the court system and the department does not control the outcome.
The department said it shares frustration when juveniles are released and continue to reoffend.
Police said addressing juvenile crime requires involvement beyond law enforcement, including parents, guardians, schools and community organizations.
The department said juveniles it encounters often lack structure, guidance and accountability.
Under Pennsylvania law, parents have the authority to reasonably discipline their children, police said.
The department asked the public to report suspicious behavior, disturbances or juveniles out past curfew.
Police said residents should lock their vehicles and keep firearms secured in their homes.
The department said it will increase bike and foot patrols and enforce zero-tolerance curfew laws.
Police said they will pursue holding parents and guardians accountable under the law when appropriate.
