Man arrested after police chase in Bern Township

BERN TOWNSHIP, PA — A police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding at approximately 6:40 p.m. April 26, 2026.

The vehicle was traveling 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The driver, Luis Hernandez, fled at a high rate of speed instead of pulling over.

The vehicle entered a residential development, where Hernandez exited and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers established a perimeter and conducted a canvass of the area.

Hernandez was located and arrested.

He was arraigned and committed to Berks County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Further investigation revealed Hernandez was already out on bail from New York City for auto theft-related charges.

The Bern Township Police Department was assisted by Northern Berks Police Department, Muhlenberg Police Department and Wyomissing Police Department.
