NEWPORT — A Newport woman has been charged with assault on law enforcement after police say she spit in an officer’s face during a response to a report of self-harm.
Hailey Tullis, 21, was arrested Thursday evening after Newport Police responded to a residence on Sias Avenue at about 9:12 p.m. for a report of an individual harming themselves, according to the department.
Officers and Newport EMS found a significant amount of blood inside the home but determined Tullis had fled, police said. She later returned to the residence and was reported to have a knife.
When officers arrived a second time, Tullis attempted to leave through a window, police said.
Officers contained her but said she was uncooperative as they checked for weapons and assessed her injuries. She was placed in handcuffs after she spit in the face of an officer, according to the department.
Tullis was taken to North Country Hospital for evaluation and later transported to the police department. She was arraigned Friday in Orleans District Court and ordered held on $2,000 bail.
