BEACH HAVEN, NJ — Police are warning residents about a scam involving unsolicited packages containing QR codes.
The Beach Haven Police Department issued an alert after receiving reports of residents receiving packages in the mail that were either opened and empty or contained small items they did not order.
The packages contain QR codes that recipients are instructed to scan.
Police said scanning the QR code can allow scammers to access personal information, passwords and bank information stored on a phone.
The scam may also damage a phone’s operating system, according to police.
Authorities are advising residents who receive unexpected packages not to scan any QR codes or fill out enclosed surveys.
Anyone who receives a suspicious package is asked to contact the Beach Haven Police Department or the post office.
