SMITHFIELD, PA — A federal jury has convicted a man on multiple charges stemming from a series of bank robberies across the Hampton Roads region earlier this year.
Tyrone Jefferson Perry Jr. was found guilty of bank robbery, bank robbery with a dangerous weapon, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The conviction follows four bank robberies that occurred between February and March across multiple jurisdictions.
The second robbery in the series occurred in Smithfield and was investigated by the Smithfield Police Department.
Law enforcement determined Perry used a stolen vehicle and license plates obtained from a rental car company where he was employed.
During the robberies, Perry approached bank tellers, demanded money, and brandished a firearm in multiple incidents.
The Smithfield Police Department worked with the FBI Norfolk office, Newport News Police Department, Henrico County Police, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office to identify and apprehend Perry.
Information developed during the Smithfield investigation played a key role in connecting the series of robberies across multiple jurisdictions.
Perry has multiple prior felony convictions.
He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 21 years and up to life in prison.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 23, 2026.
