WESTFIELD, NJ — A Newark man was arrested following a domestic incident and standoff at a residence on Sandra Circle.

Adrian O’Farrill, 42, of Newark, was taken into custody at approximately 7:17 p.m. on April 21 after barricading himself inside an apartment in the Wychwood Gardens community.

Police Chief Christopher Battiloro said officers responded to the apartment at approximately 2:52 p.m. to investigate a domestic incident.

Officers determined O’Farrill had locked and barricaded himself inside the apartment and was refusing to communicate with them.

A female victim was transported to the Westfield Police Department where she was granted a domestic violence temporary restraining order.

The restraining order granted the victim sole possession of the residence and custody of a shared child.

The Westfield Police Department requested assistance from Union County SWAT to serve the protective order and arrest O’Farrill on criminal charges including obstructing the administration of law.

After O’Farrill repeatedly refused to exit or allow entry despite attempts by crisis negotiators to communicate with him, SWAT forced entry into the apartment.

O’Farrill was taken into custody without further incident.

He was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree obstructing administration of law and disorderly persons theft by unlawful taking.

O’Farrill was processed at the Westfield Police Department and committed to the Essex County Jail in Newark pending court proceedings.

Battiloro said O’Farrill was never believed to be armed and did not present safety concerns for other persons.

The Westfield Fire Department and Union County EMS also responded to the incident.

No injuries were reported.
