SHAFTSBURY, VT — Vermont State Police arrested a Londonderry man early Thursday morning after responding to an attempted burglary at a residence on White Creek Road.

Robert T. Metcalfe, 32, of Londonderry, was taken into custody at 5:47 a.m. a short distance from the home of Nancy Myers, 73, of Shaftsbury.

Police said Metcalfe had stolen a vehicle in Hoosick Falls, New York, during the overnight hours and abandoned it on railroad tracks in Shaftsbury before attempting to break into Myers’ residence.

The Bennington Police Department assisted Vermont State Police in locating and apprehending Metcalfe.

After being taken into custody and while at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Metcalfe approached a state trooper and attempted to retrieve the officer’s holstered sidearm before being brought under control, police said.

Metcalfe was charged with attempted burglary, attempted unlawful trespass into a dwelling, unlawful mischief, receiving stolen property and impeding public officers.

He was transported to Marble Valley Correctional Center and held on $10,000 bail.

Metcalfe is scheduled to be arraigned in Vermont Superior Court Bennington Criminal Division on April 20 at 12:30 p.m.
