GREECE, NY — A Middleport man has been arrested in connection with a multi-county check fraud investigation involving stolen and altered checks.

Eric Gibbs, 38, of Middleport, was taken into custody April 16 by members of the Criminal Investigation Division with assistance from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

Greece detectives have been investigating a pattern of stolen and altered checks taken from a mailbox along Latta Road since the beginning of March.

The checks were cashed at various financial institutions across Monroe, Ontario and Orleans counties, according to police.

Detectives identified Gibbs as the suspect through coordination with banks and local businesses to obtain and review surveillance footage.

Gibbs was taken into custody without incident.

Another individual residing at the same address was also taken into custody by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office on unrelated outstanding warrants.

Gibbs has been charged in six separate cases with identity theft in the first degree, criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree and grand larceny in the fourth degree.

The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be pending.
