Two arrested in Binghamton on weapons, forgery charges

BINGHAMTON, NY — Two people were arrested April 13, 2026, in connection with the theft of a firearm, ammunition and blank checks from a residence in Chenango County.

Kevin A. Wright III, 22, of Binghamton, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree, a class C felony, grand larceny in the 4th degree, a class E felony, and criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree, a class E felony.

An 18-year-old woman from Smithville Flats was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree, a class C felony, 27 counts of forgery in the 2nd degree, a class D felony, five counts of possession of forged instrument in the 2nd degree, a class D felony, grand larceny in the 4th degree, a class E felony, and criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree, a class E felony.

In February, troopers responded to a residence in Smithville Flats after fraudulent charges were made using a victim’s account.

The victim discovered a checkbook, a revolver and ammunition for the revolver were missing.

An investigator from State Police Sidney discovered that 27 checks were fraudulently signed and numerous transactions were made using a credit or debit card.

The total charges were just under $14,000.

The investigator determined that the two used the vulnerability of older adults who were known to the woman to steal the items.

Members of the Troop C Community Stabilization Unit observed Wright and the 18-year-old woman in a Toyota Rav 4 in Binghamton.

Troopers observed vehicle and traffic infractions and initiated a traffic stop on Gaines Avenue.

Wright was found to be wanted on an active arrest warrant with another police agency.

The 18-year-old woman was found to be in possession of five forged checks from the victim.

Troopers located the loaded revolver within the vehicle that was also stolen from the victim.

Wright and the 18-year-old woman were processed at State Police Endwell then transported to the Broome County Jail for centralized arraignment.
