WATERFORD — Vermont State Police arrested a 70-year-old Maine man on DUI charges after he was reported driving the wrong way on Interstate 93 on July 4.

Jay Wells of Caribou, Maine, was taken into custody at approximately 8:08 p.m. after troopers conducted a traffic stop near mile marker 2.

Police responded to numerous 911 calls reporting a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-93.

While troopers were en route, callers reported the vehicle had turned around and was traveling in the correct direction.

Troopers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

An investigation determined Wells had operated under the influence of drugs, police said.

Wells was charged with DUI-drugs and gross negligent operation.

He was transported to the Vermont State Police barracks for processing and later released on a citation to appear in court.
