FAIRFIELD — A 16-year-old Bridgeport driver has been charged as an adult in connection with a fatal crash that killed a moped operator Saturday night.
Juan Otilio Tista Tista, 25, of Bridgeport, died at a local hospital after his moped was struck at the intersection of Post Road and South Benson Road around 9:30 p.m. June 21.
Police say Antony Gutierrez Silva was driving westbound on Post Road when he attempted to turn left onto South Benson Road.
Gutierrez Silva entered the path of Tista Tista’s moped, which was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Post Road, according to investigators.
Gutierrez Silva fled the scene without rendering aid or notifying authorities, police said.
A witness attempted to follow the fleeing driver, but Gutierrez Silva struck the witness’s vehicle while trying to evade and continued fleeing, police said.
Officers located Gutierrez Silva at his Bridgeport residence later that evening and seized his vehicle.
Gutierrez Silva faces charges including negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, operating without a license, evading responsibility resulting in death, and failure to grant right of way while turning left.
He is being charged as an adult under Connecticut law because motor vehicle offenses are not considered juvenile matters.
The Fairfield Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident.
