HAVERSTRAW — A 19-year-old Spring Valley man drowned in the Hudson River at Haverstraw Beach State Park on June 25, state police said.
Eric A. Chugchilin went underwater at approximately 4:05 p.m. and did not resurface after entering a deeper area of the river, according to New York State Police.
Troopers from State Police Haverstraw responded to the report near the parking area at the state park on Riverside Avenue.
The investigation revealed Chugchilin was walking through the water when he entered the deeper area where the water was over his head.
Friends attempted to assist him but were unsuccessful.
At approximately 6:20 p.m., Chugchilin was located deceased on the riverbed.
His body was recovered from the water by the Piermont Fire Department.
Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of death was an apparent accidental drowning.
The New York State Police were assisted by the New York State Parks Police, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Forest Rangers, Department of Environmental Conservation Police, Westchester County Police Marine Unit, Town of Haverstraw Police Department, Thiells Fire Department, Stony Point Fire Department, and the Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Dive Team.
