FULTONVILLE — A commercial dump truck crashed through a residence on Washington Street after the driver experienced a medical event on Interstate 90 this morning.

New York State Police Troop T Zone 2 responded to the collision at approximately 7:31 a.m. near mile marker 182.6.

A 2025 Peterbilt dump truck operated by Merwin W. Wells, 63, of Fort Plain, was traveling eastbound when Wells reportedly suffered a “coughing fit” and briefly lost consciousness.

The vehicle veered through the left shoulder into the median, breached the center guide rail, crossed all westbound lanes, and crashed through the north-side guide rail.

The truck continued down a steep embankment, through a wooded area, and struck the residence at 24 Washington Street.

The truck impacted and destroyed the rear main bedroom of the home.

The residence was occupied by a 51-year-old man and his two sons, ages 24 and 20, at the time of the crash.

None of the residents were in the impacted room during the crash, and no injuries were reported to the occupants.

Wells sustained minor injuries and was transported to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville for treatment.

The crash ruptured a home heating oil tank behind the residence, resulting in an estimated 150-gallon oil spill.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation spill response team responded to manage the cleanup.

State Police were assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Thruway Authority personnel, and the Fonda-Fultonville Fire Department.
