Brattleboro man charged with assault, robbery of 79-year-old Jamaica resident

JAMAICA — A 50-year-old Brattleboro man faces multiple charges including assault and robbery after allegedly attacking a 79-year-old Jamaica resident on Vermont Route 100 North on June 14 at approximately 11:43 a.m.

Jason R. Smith was arrested June 16 following a multi-day investigation by Vermont State Police.

Police said Smith committed assault and robbery, simple assault, larceny from a person and criminal threatening against Jack Connolly, 79, of Jamaica.

Initial attempts to locate Smith were unsuccessful.

On June 15 at approximately 8:57 p.m., Vermont State Police were notified of a motor vehicle theft in Dummerston.

Police issued a request for information, and members of the public provided tips that led to the stolen vehicle being located June 16 in Brattleboro.

Troopers responded and located a man matching Smith’s description traveling on foot near the stolen vehicle.

The man was detained on Elliott Street and initially provided a false name to police.

The suspect was positively identified as Smith and taken into custody without further incident.

Smith was transported to the Westminster Barracks and held without bail at the Southern State Correctional Facility.

Smith was issued a criminal citation to appear before Windham County Superior Court on June 17 at 12:30 p.m.

He faces charges of assault and robbery, simple assault, larceny from a person, criminal threatening, grand larceny, operation without owner’s consent, possession of stolen property, false information to a police officer, burglary and unlawful trespass.
