EXETER — A 42-year-old Plaistow woman was fatally struck by an Amtrak train June 2 while attempting to rescue her dog from railroad tracks.
Alicia Leonardi died from her injuries after the incident that occurred at approximately 3:24 p.m. in a wooded area near the Newfields Road trestle, according to the Exeter Police Department.
Preliminary investigation indicates Leonardi and a male companion were walking their unleashed dog along the tracks when a train approached quickly from around a corner.
The dog ran onto the tracks when the train’s horn sounded, police said.
Both people were struck by the train while attempting to get the dog off the tracks.
The male companion sustained minor injuries.
Exeter Police and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the scene after the incident was reported by train authorities.
Exeter Police continue to work with Amtrak Police and CSX Police investigators.
The case remains under investigation.
