PORTSMOUTH — A search is underway for a missing person who was captured on video surveillance jumping from the Sara Long Bridge into the Piscataqua River.
Portsmouth Police Department began investigating a missing person report at approximately 10 p.m. on April 30.
The following morning at about 10 a.m., the Department of Transportation notified police that surveillance footage showed someone matching the missing person’s description jumping from the bridge at approximately 8:49 p.m. on April 30.
Authorities immediately launched a search of the Piscataqua River after discovering the video.
As of the police department’s media release, the individual has not been located.
New Hampshire Marine Patrol is leading ongoing search efforts on the river.
The identity of the missing person is being withheld while the investigation continues.
Multiple agencies have joined the search effort, including the United States Coast Guard, Portsmouth Fire Department, Kittery Police, Kittery Harbor Master, and the Newington and Rye Fire Departments.
Portsmouth Police, along with mental health partners, remind the public that the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for individuals experiencing emotional distress or suicidal thoughts.
