Man found dead in Piscataqua River after car abandoned on bridge

PORTSMOUTH — A man was found dead in the Piscataqua River Wednesday evening after authorities discovered an abandoned vehicle on the I-95 bridge, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Troopers from the Troop A barracks responded to a report of a stopped car in the breakdown lane on the northbound side of the Piscataqua River Bridge at 7:08 p.m. on April 30.

Approximately 30 minutes later, an adult male was found in the river below.

The individual was recovered and transported to a local hospital where life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

State Police said they do not believe the death is suspicious at this time.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending the ongoing investigation.

The Portsmouth Police Department, New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol, Portsmouth Fire Department, and United States Coast Guard assisted at the scene.
