PEMBROKE — Police are alerting residents about a new scam targeting local individuals through mail correspondence claiming to offer unclaimed life insurance money.
The Pembroke Police Department reported Tuesday that at least one resident has received fraudulent mail from scammers posing as Canadian attorneys.
The scammers claim to be offering to share proceeds from an unclaimed life insurance policy.
Authorities are urging residents to be cautious of any mail from unknown senders that contains offers that seem too good to be true.
Police emphasized that vulnerable populations are particularly at risk of falling victim to such scams.
Officials recommend that residents discuss these potential scams with family members who might be susceptible to manipulation or intimidation through false promises or threats.
