West Haven burglar identified, charged in two restaurant break-ins

NEW HAVEN — West Haven Police have charged a suspect with two burglaries that occurred at local restaurants on Dec. 29.

The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Robert Vitelli, allegedly broke into Oak Beach Bar and Grill and Apps Restaurant, according to police reports.

At Oak Beach, a window was shattered, allowing entry, and approximately $500 was stolen.

Apps Restaurant was similarly burglarized when a window was broken, and the cash register was taken, although it was later found to be empty.

West Haven Police Detectives launched an in-depth investigation which led to the identification of Vitelli, who is homeless and originates from New Haven.

Vitelli was already in custody for a separate burglary in the town of Orange.

With two arrest warrants approved by a judge, Vitelli faced additional charges while he was in Milford Superior Court.

For the burglary at Oak Beach Bar and Grill, Vitelli has been charged with third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, and sixth-degree larceny.

The charges for the Apps Restaurant break-in include third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, and sixth-degree larceny.

The investigation is ongoing as detectives continue to gather evidence in the case.
