CONCORD — A North Andover woman has pleaded guilty to charges involving a tech support scam that preyed on an elderly resident of Allenstown, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office announced Wednesday.
Rachel Chen, 26, admitted to two counts of conspiracy to commit theft by deception and one count of theft by deception at Merrimack County Superior Court.
Chen’s sentencing comes after an investigation into a fraudulent operation that took place last year.
Authorities said Chen was arrested in March when she attempted to collect $22,000 from an elderly victim in Allenstown.
The victim had been misled to believe his computer was infected with a virus, putting his bank accounts in jeopardy, according to prosecutors.
Co-conspirators of Chen, one masquerading as a bank official, convinced the victim to secure his money by handing it over.
Following their instructions, the victim placed the cash in a taped box.
Chen then arrived at the victim’s home under a false identity, using a predetermined password to take the money-laden box.
Chen’s indictment occurred in July, following the discovery of her involvement in the scheme.
