Norton child found in icy pond, pronounced dead at hospital

NORTON — The Norton Fire and Police Departments rescued a 6-year-old girl from a partially frozen pond on Friday, Jan. 17 after she was reported missing earlier in the afternoon.

At 2:28 p.m., dispatchers received a call regarding the missing child.

Fire department personnel were dispatched to aid police in the search around the child’s home, which is located near Barrowsville Pond and the Wading River.

A rescue command post was established on the bridge across from the child’s residence.

Firefighters donned cold water rescue suits and entered the water in an effort to find the young girl.

The child was located by divers at 3:27 p.m. in the pond on the Barrowsville side of the bridge on Power Street.

Emergency medical services performed life-saving efforts both at the scene and during transport to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where she was ultimately pronounced deceased.

The Norton Fire Department and Norton Police were assisted by the Massachusetts State Police, Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council, and Norton Emergency Management Agency in the recovery efforts.
