NEWBURGH — The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office reported the discovery of a 73-year-old man found deceased underneath his home Thursday evening after conducting a search for the missing resident.

Family members had alerted authorities earlier that day when they were unable to locate the man, who lived alone.

Upon inspection of the home, officials noted that his personal belongings were undisturbed and suggested he may have been missing for some time.

During a thorough search of the property, deputies uncovered a small shed adjacent to the house, with its door fastened from the outside.

Inside the shed, they found the body of the missing man.

It is believed that he succumbed to the cold after becoming trapped.

Initial observations suggest he had entered the shed to access frozen pipes and was inadvertently locked inside due to the door latching behind him.

The man’s limited mobility likely prevented him from escaping.

The Sheriff’s Office took the opportunity to remind the community of the risks associated with the current harsh weather conditions and urged residents to seek assistance for heating and other household issues.

They emphasized the importance of checking on neighbors and offering help, noting that such actions could be life-saving.

For those in need, the Sheriff’s Office’s basic needs program is available to help connect residents with necessary resources, reinforcing the message that no one should feel alone during these challenging times.
