MILTON — A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 North led to the arrest of a Fairfax man on Christmas Day for driving under the influence and several other charges, police said.
At around 6:34 p.m., Vermont State Police, assisted by the Milton Police Department, responded to a report of a vehicle that had gone off the road near mile marker 101.4.
The driver, identified as Scott Russell, 63, attempted to flee the scene on foot but was found hiding in the woods by law enforcement.
An active instate warrant for Russell’s arrest was discovered during the investigation, related to his failure to appear for a previous charge of Aggravated Domestic Assault.
Officers also determined that Russell had been driving with a criminally suspended license.
Upon interacting with Russell, troopers noticed signs of impairment.
He was taken into custody and transported to the Williston Barracks for processing, where he refused to provide a breath sample for alcohol testing.
Russell was subsequently lodged at the Northwest State Correctional Facility on a $5,000 bail as ordered by the warrant.
He is scheduled to appear at the Chittenden County Superior Court on Jan. 14 to face charges, including DUI #5 – Criminal Refusal, operating with a criminally suspended license, and violation of conditions of release.
The 2006 Mazda3 Russell was driving sustained front-end damage in the incident, and no injuries were reported.
